ABOUT Professor Ambrosina Michelotti earned a Bachelor (BSc) in Biological Sciences in 1980, a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1984 and her specialty diploma in Orthodontics in 1991. Her academic achievements were further recognized in 2018 with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Dentistry from the University of Malmö, Sweden. Professor Michelotti is a full professor in Orthodontics and Clinical Gnathology and serves as the Head of the Orthodontic Division at the University of Naples Federico II.
In addition, she oversees the Master courses in «Orofacial Pain and Temporo-mandibular Disorders» and «New Clinical Approaches in Contemporary Orthodontics.» She has been a member of the Italian Board of Orthodontics since 2004 and the European Board of Orthodontics since 2005. She was inducted into the Angle East Society as an active member in 2016, received the Brainerd «Barney» Swain Award of Excellence from the Angle Society in 2019, and was honored with the Distinguished Teacher Award by the European Orthodontic Society in 2023.
Professor Michelotti has held numerous leadership positions, including President of the European Academy of Craniomandibular Disorders, the Neuroscience Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), and the Italian Society of Temporomandibular Disorders (SIDA). She has led the RDC/TMD Consortium at IADR and the Italian Board of Orthodontics. Currently, she is President of the European Society of Oral Physiology, President Elect of the Special Interest Group (SIG) of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), as well as the Secretary of the Network of Erasmus-Based European Orthodontic Programs (NEBEOP). Professor Michelotti currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Orthodontics and Cranio-Facial Research, Associate Editor for the European Journal of Oral Sciences, and the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. Furthermore, she is a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Orthodontics and reviewer for several scientific journals. Besides, she is a member of the board of the interdisciplinary competence center of orthodontics (ICCO).
Her research is primarily focused on Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), Orofacial Pain (OFP), Orthodontics, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), where she continues to contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge and treatment in these areas.
